• Desalination plant and the bolts used in it 

Desalination, or removal of salt from water is a process where safe drinking water is generated by using the ocean water and is converted to safe drinking water fit for drinking. Due to increase demand of water in middle east and the growing population in the gulf specially in countries like, bahrain, Dubai, Oman, Saudi arabia, Qatar, Iran and Iraq, new projects have been announced lately which involve the use of desalination technique to convert salty water into drinking water

This water is suitable for drinking and is also used for irrigation and for making the land fertile. Gieven the extent of salination in water and the high corrosiveness it is suggested that stainless steel bolts be used as they are the best alternatives in cases where the equipemt is at high risk of corrosion.

There are many different techniques available these days to convert water to safe drinking water, these are like sewage treatment and reverse osmosis. Traditional methods of boiling water etc and filteration are all part of desalination. The traditional process used in these operations is vacumm desalination essentially the boiling of water at less than atmospheric pressure and thus a much lower temperature than normal. This is because the boiling of a liquid occurs when the vapour pressures equals the ambient pressure and vapor pressure increases with temperature. Thus, because of the reduced temperature, low-temperature "waste" heat from electrical power generation or industrial processes can be used.

Stainless steel bolts are used widely in such applications and are much suited for these types of areas where there is high risk of the bolting material being in contact with water, thus special emphasis must be given to the use of stainless steel material for such applications.
